Bubbles, Curves and Corners Exploding Lemoynes

I've got all the info in one place! Yea Me!

But what does this mean?

It means that as a Certified Instructor with Deb Tucker's Studio 180 Design tools, I accepted the invitation to join with other Certified Instructors on a Blog Hop to share some of the great BlockBuster blocks and the new Bubbles, Curves and Corners line of fabric from Island Batik.

I chose BlockBuster #19 Exploding Lemoynes as my BlockBuster block. I love the Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star tool and have a few projects planned for this year so this was a bit of added practice. The BlockBuster instructions gives 3 sizes of units to make. I chose the 6" units to make 12" blocks. I also had the choice to do 4" units (8" blocks) or 8" units (16" blocks).

All the instructions I needed to create these units came with the Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star tool.  The BlockBuster instructions give the quilter additional ideas on how to use the tool. What a great resource!

Once the block was chosen, next came choosing the fabric. With this block it all depended on the fabrics used and where they were to go. The block itself is made up of 4 units but when you put 4 blocks together you get a lovely arrangement. I kept it simple and ordered just 3 fabrics and a background. My finished blocks look different from the samples because of my fabric choices and arrangement.

The first step was to decide which fabric went where. A little bit of colouring with a few markers and I had a good idea where I wanted to go with my project.

As the finished "blocks" were made up of 4 identical unit arrangements, I assembly lined my sewing and trimming.

The following image is of the block made up of individual units. I apologize for the poor background fabric in the picture. It was not very well done of me! You'll se that the top right and the bottom left units are mirror images. That caused me a bit of confusion but I was able to figure out which fabrics went where!

And 4 units sewn together into the blocks. I've arranged 4 blocks here to see how everything goes together. I like it!

Even though I had sufficient fabric to make 3 completed large blocks, I didn't have enough of the background white. So I floated the blocks with a bit more background white and added a nice wide border.

The quilt was loaded on my longarm and quilted. As I knew this was going to be a wall hanging and not a table runner, I decided to have some fun with a double batting (cotton/poly on the bottom and wool on the top) for some extra texture.

My lovely Exploding Lemoynes has been hung in the prime spot opposite my front door. I get to see it every time I go up or down the stairs. This was a fun project to work on and I'm even thinking that these blocks could be a really nice full size quilt.

I was asked to post on the first day of this Blog Hop. Check out the wonderful CIs who will be sharing the rest of the week. I can't wait to see what they have done!
